2022 IRONMAN Staffordshire Update

The route for the 2022 IRONMAN 70.3 Staffordshire is set and ready.

The gruelling IRONMAN 70.3 Staffordshire triathlon event will take place on Sunday 12th June 2022 and covers 70.3 miles through the Staffordshire countryside, passing through Stafford, Rugeley and Cannock Chase

The IRONMAN 70.3 Staffordshire ‘first-timer friendly course’ traverses much of our wonderful countryside providing an opportunity to showcase Staffordshire across the UK and internationally.

With a reservoir swim, meandering bike course, and finish line in Stafford’s Market Square, athletes will be taking true advantage of the region’s beauty.

The 2022 IRONMAN 70.3 Staffordshire Route

  • The race starts with a one-lap swim course which is 1.2 miles long and will take place at stunning Chasewater, near Lichfield.
  • After this, athletes will get on their bikes and travel through the heart of the Staffordshire countryside. The 56 bike mile route will follow the road up heading north of Burntwood and Lichfield, through Kings Bromley and Yoxall and then head towards Draycott-in-the-Clay.
  • The route then turns west and south past Bagot’s Wood and Admaston towards Rugeley.
  • Cyclists will turn onto Bower Lane, around roads on Cannock Chase and back before heading to Wolseley Bridge and into Stafford via Tixall, to the transition point at Riverway, where Athletes will swap bike for running shoes, and commence stage 3 – a half marathon!
  • The 13.1 mile run course goes through Stafford, running alongside the River Sow, into Stafford town centre and towards Stafford Castle before finishing off in Stafford Market Square where up to 3,000 exhausted Athletes will cross the iconic IRONMAN finish line and receive their well deserved medal.

Residents, businesses and visitors are urged to plan ahead for travel during the event weekend

https://www.ironman.com/im703-staffordshire-courseAlmost 3000 athletes will compete on the day, and an event as big as this takes some meticulous planning as you can imagine.

This includes several road access and traffic management initiatives.

Chasewater Country Park will be closed to vehicles on Saturday June 11 from 8am until 6pm and Sunday June 12 from 4am until 10am.

Roads in Stafford affected include Tixall Road, Hatherton Street, Fairway, Riverway, Bridge Street, South Walls, Newport Road, Kingsway and Unicorn Way. Riverway will also be fully closed to traffic on Saturday June 11 from 8am until 6pm.

Other routes may also be affected along the bike route or other parts of the event.

So if you live, work or plan to visit or travel near any of the route outlined above, then you are urged to look at the traffic access page on the official IRONMAN STAFFORDSHIRE website and plan any travel or journey that you intend to make on the weekend of 11th and 12th June 2022 accordingly.

There will be unrestricted access for emergency services at all times.
